A 01_Attributive Adjective Agreement

Definition
The property Attributive Adjective Agreement has the value "Yes" when there is at least one attributive adjective that shows agreement with (at least some of) the nouns it modifies.

Definition of Attributive Adjective

NA (Not Applicable): NA for this property means that the language does not have attributive adjectives.

1.
English is "no" for the property Attributive Adjective Agreement since adjectives never agree with the noun phrase they modify:

one big book
three big books
one big girl
three big girls
one big boy
three big boys

2.
Icelandic is "Yes" for Attributive Adjective Agreement, since attributive adjectives agree with the nouns they modify in number, case, and gender.

Ég á rauð-an bíll.
I have red-ACC.M.SG car.ACC.M.SG
"I have a red car".

3.
Italian is "yes" for the property of Attributive Adjective Agreement, since an adjective may agree in gender and number with the noun it modifies, as in:

un libr-o ross-o
one book-M.SG red-M.SG
"one red book"

tre libr-i ross-i
three books-M.PL red-M.PL
"Three red books"

una macchin-a ross-a
one car-F.SG red-F.SG
"one red car"

tre macchin-e ross-e
three cars-F.PL red-F.PL
"Three red cars"

Note: a large (but minority) class of adjectives (and nouns) in Italian show number alternation but no gender alternation, e.g. "intelligent-e" is singular for either gender and "intelligent-i" is plural for either gender.

4.
Japanese is "no" for the property Attributive Adjective Agreement since adjectives never agree with the nouns they modify.

i-ssatu-no akai hon
1-CLF-GEN red book
"one red book"

san-satu-no akai hon
3-CLF-GEN red book
"three red books"

  Words: kx’ù -qà kı́- zȁ -n|ne
Gloss: pot -PL PL- new -PL
Translation: “new pots” (Collins and Gruber: 144).
Comment: There are only a small number of cases of direct attributive adjectival modification. These attributive adjectives include =Hoan translations of adjectives such as “female”, “male”, “old” and “new”. Other cases in which an adjective modifies a noun are expressed through a relative clause with a predicate adjective (refer to A02). The examples are from the grammar by Collins, Chris and Gruber, Jeff. 2012. A Grammar of ǂHȍã.

In some cases, it could be phonological assimilation in signing locus.

Comment: Teramano does not present agreement in the adjective since the language underwent neutralization of the final vowel to a schwa. The final vowel would be the one agreeing in gender. However, the number agreement is present in the stem, the stressed vowel is [+high] when the word is plural. Plural agreement is present.
