| General Note: How do definite and indefinite noun numeral combinations differ in form? This is the fourth of seven... To set these, use the examples for the specific contexts in N2 01 through N2 04. Check as many "yes" values as applicable. If in doubt, just leave the property value(s) unset, and contact us via email. This property is set to "yes" if the definite NP (Num N, N Num) contains a Plural marker, but the indefinite (Num N, N Num) does not. Examples. 1. English is “no” for this property, as the definite and indefinite noun phrases are not distinguished in this respect: There are three posters on the wall The three posters are funny 2. Bambara is “yes” for this property, as there the plural u/w only occurs in definite noun phrases. misi fila bè ne fè cow two is I with I have two cows misi fila w cows two PL the two cows 3. Gungbe is “yes". The plural lɛ́ must appear in the definite noun context, but cannot appear in indefinites: a. Definite: Wémà ɛ̀nɛ̀ lɛ́ ( lɔ́ ) kò wá letter four PL (Det) already come 'The four letters have already arrived.' b.Indefinite: Kpɔ́n! vì àwè tò àlìò jí look child two LOC road on 'Look! There are two children on the road.' (Example provided by Enoch Aboh.) |
