    Order of definite articles and nouns in object position

    There are six property definitions for relative order of definite articles and nouns in object position:

    Order DefArt—N with mass nouns in object position, Order N–DefArt with mass nouns in object position, Order DefArt—N with singular count nouns in object position, Order N–DefArt with singular count nouns in object position, Order DefArt—N with plural nouns in object position, Order N–DefArt with plural nouns in object position


w12b: Order Noun–Definite Article with mass nouns in object position


This property is set to "yes" if the language has the order Noun–Definite Article (or, for languages without articles, noun class marker, classifier, case ending, adposition, ...), with mass nouns in object position.


Elicitation Context

Speaker A and speaker B are back from the supermarket. Speaker A says: Please, put the water in the fridge!


Additional instructions

  1. This property applies only to definite mass nouns (the water, the milk), not to indefinite nouns, kinship nouns or proper names
  2. The noun must be unmodified (no adjectives, no possessors, no relative clauses, no other modifiers ...)

NB: A “yes” value for this property does not exclude a yes value for property “w12a Order DefArt - N with mass nouns in object position”.


Examples

1.

Basque is “yes” for this property. It has the order N--DefArt with mass nouns in object position.


(i) ardo-a edan dut
wine-A drink AUX
"I drank the wine"


2.

English is “no” for this property. The order N--DefArt is excluded with mass nonus in object position.


(i)     *Put milk the in the fridge!


DefArt--N is the only attested order.


(ii)    Put the milk in the fridge!
